I wont mince words here: Female Hip-Hop is out of control. Just because a man would smut you doesn’t mean he wants to hear you rapping about it. In the mid-90’s teenage girls were listening to Lil Kim, but they knew there was at least a tinge of impropriety as she was clearly catering herself to grown women who felt sexually repressed by society. Kim paved the way for Foxy Brown, Trina, Shawna, and everyone else’s carbon copy hoebag material (im not sexist, I hate 99% of male rap records about sex as well) as record labels placed business over ingenuity, and now in 2010 we have the Nicki Minaj effect. Props to Eve for being sexy without slutting it up, but she’s irrelevant now. Props to Remy for trying to keep it authentically hard, but the streets say she’s been found guilty of shooting someone. I know you’re probably reading this thinking “What about the REAL female MCs?” Newsflash: The Bahamadias, Psalm Ones, Rah Diggas, Jean Graes and Invincibles of the world primarily impress men and don’t stand a chance of seeping in to adolescent females, as the large majority of them don’t care about wit, flow and metaphors.
Enter Tarica June.
Some random person on Twitter hyped her as dope and I keep an open ear for everything that I can. Part Dead Prez/RBG mixed with the sensibilities of a woman growing into her own in this crazy world, I really enjoyed her topic material. Not only that but she can rap too, I’m of the firm belief that once she projects her voice with wrath (only noted because I hear the potential for this) and loosens up to have a little more fun she’ll be well on her way.
